Success
for Deeside Writers
Deeside Writers' Group are
celebrating their success at the Annual
Scottish
Association of Writers' Conference in Glasgow, where
members Ruth Howell and Elaine Reid scooped numerous
awards.
The writers' work was judged in
seventeen different categories. Ruth Howell won
trophies for a short story and a factual article,
and took third place in the Humorous Article
category. She was also commended in both the Poetry
and General Novel categories. Elaine Reid was
delighted to take third place in the Women's Short
Fiction category.
Ruth said, 'The conference was a
wonderful opportunity to meet other writers. There
were almost two hundred delegates from all over
Scotland. People were very friendly, and it was
great to meet excellent writers such as Linda
Gillard and Evelyn Hood, who were very generous with
their advice to new and less-established writers.'
Speakers at the conference included
Lindy Cheyne from 'The Leopard' magazine and Robert
Douglas, who read from his brilliant and touching
autobiography, 'The Last Song of the Night Tram.'

Relaunch of Deeside Writers
Crathes Castle was the venue for the re-launch of the
Deeside Writers' Group on Saturday 16 February. The glorious
sunshine drew a large crowd to Deeside and writers came from as far
away as Sheffield to join the group's celebration in the Horsemill
Restaurant.
Deeside Writers recently held a national short story
competition which attracted entrants from all over the UK.
Prize-winning Scots writer Sheena Blackhall judged the competition
and was delighted at the high standard of the work submitted.
The Crathes audience was treated to a reading of the
four winning entries and Hazel Cargill of Aboyne provided a
delightful keyboard recital.
Group Secretary Ruth Howell said, 'We hope our guests
enjoyed the afternoon as much as we did. We were very pleased to
meet so many enthusiastic writers.' Chairperson Elaine Reid
said the gathering had been very worthwhile. 'It was a fitting event
to mark the re-launch of Deeside Writers and to reward those whose
work has brought them success.'
The overall winner of the competition was Susan Clegg
of Sheffield. The Aberdeenshire prize winner was Phyllis Goodall of
Huntly. Runners-up were Eleanor Fordyce of Forfar and Tony Matthews
of Windsor. Mary Munro of Ballater and Lorna Alexander of Glenkindie
were highly commended.
Deeside Writers are currently organising a one-day
novelists' workshop. The event will take place in June and a limited
number of places will be available. For further details, see

Competition winners announced
Congratulations to all the winners of our short story
competition! Our judge, prize-winning author Sheena Blackhall,
was delighted at the high standard of the entries, some of which
came from as far afield as France. We had sad stories, funny
stories, tales of murder, deceit and revenge. Ultimately the stories
which were most memorable tended to be those which were poignant,
humorous, or both.
If you entered our competition but were not placed,
don't give up! Many unplaced entries clearly showed promise but were
let down by poor presentation, grammar or punctuation. Please keep
trying. We wish you good luck and every future success with your
writing.
